Refrigerator dogs
Thursday, January 24th, 2008Jon Katz’ late dog, Orson, could open refrigerators. I saw a dog trained to open the frig on David Letterman. There is a Dalmation in our general vicinity who can also open the frig, and appears to be doing so with increasing frequency. I’ll keep her anonymous unless and until her mom wants to weigh in!
Ah, another use for duct tape!
90 Second Naturalist
Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008I have to capture the lion sound from Thane Maynard’s radio piece, 90 Second Naturalist. Gordy (my big dufus) gets worried when he hears that roar. If I could somehow assign this roar to our little 8 lb cat, this might help her navigate Gordy!

The dog said what?
Friday, January 18th, 2008Alright, finally!
I know I think I can tell the difference between a “someone’s here” bark and “let’s play” bark, but now we have some measurable data!
A computer accurately distinguished the tone of bark 43% of the time. Pretty good traverse across a communication gap!

Thursday, January 17th, 2008Dog Books
Thursday, January 17th, 2008Just finished reading Good Dog. Stay. by Anna Quindlen.
As quoted in the jacket’s inside cover: “The life of a good dog is like the life of a good person, only shorter and more compressed.”
It’s a quick read at only 82 pages, about half of which are dog pictures, and the other half on which the lines are generously spaced.
Since this book was about a black labrador, I am especially touched.
Dog Spa Products
Tuesday, January 15th, 2008Here’s a website that sells “dog spa” products. I haven’t noodled around much, sure hope these products haven’t been tested on humans!
Pioneer Park
Sunday, January 13th, 2008Dan Miller was wondering aloud, on-air yesterday. He pointed his listeners to posted signs in Pioneer Park. One sign tells us no dogs allowed, another tells us to pick up after our dogs.
I appreciate his confusion. Here’s what I think: the city doesn’t want us to break the law, but if we do, don’t leave evidence behind!
